Shrimp Fra Diavolo Pasties

For this meal, we decided to take the concept behind our Shrimp Fra Diavolo Pizza and blend it with a classic English fare: the Pasty! We started by making a short crust pastry dough, and then while it cooled and hydrated, we made our spicy shrimp filling. Then, we put it all together and baked into a little pocket of joy. When all was said and done, we had a spicy and unique filling and a little bit of crunch to our dough to add to a texture differential.

We served our pasties with Garlic and Pepper Green Beans! However, steamed broccoli, peas, or a side salad would also make for a good pairing.

Time: 90 Minutes

Ingredients:

  • Short Crust Pie Dough
  • Shrimp
  • Onion
  • Garlic
  • Marinara Sauce
  • Red Pepper Flakes
  • Butter or Egg (for brushing atop your pasties pre-cooking)

Method:

  • Prep your Dough, and wrap it in plastic wrap, and set in the fridge to cool.
  • Peel and dice your garlic and onion.
  • Heat some olive oil in a pan, and add your garlic and onion. Cook until they caramelize and start to brown.
  • Pour in some marinara sauce, and stir to combine. Sprinkle in some red pepper flakes, and continue cooking until the excess liquids evaporate.
  • Peel and dice your shrimp. Then, add to the pan, stir to combine, and cook fully.
  • As your shrimp cooks, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Pull your dough out from the fridge, cut it into the number of pasties you plan to make, and roll it out into large circles. We like to do this on parchment paper.
  • Spread your shrimp mixture atop half of each dough, and leave some room at the edges.
  • Fold your pasty dough over, and crimp the edges. Then, transfer to a baking sheet.
  • Either melt some butter or whisk an egg, and brush it atop your pasties.
  • Stash in the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes.
  • Plate, devour, and enjoy!
