We needed a meal that would be very fast to serve since my sous chef had a baseball game in a neighboring town at night, and we had to leave for it too early for dinner….and would get home too late to cook something. So, we decided to build a Sloppy Joe filling to keep hot in the slow cooker so we could just scoop when we got home!
We figured that for this iteration, we’d change up the flavour profile a bit and add some richness to replace some of the tartness we normally go for…so we swapped out the apple cider vinegar + brown sugar combo for molasses! The result was a unique depth of flavour that turned out to work exactly as we’d hoped. The last addition was a few slices of cheddar cheese to add a dimension of saltiness, and that put the sandwich over the top.
We served our sandwiches with a side salad, which worked really well. However, we think this would also work really well with roasted veggies.

Time: 30 Minutes
Ingredients:
- Ground Meat. We used chicken.
- Onion
- Red Bell Pepper
- Garlic
- Ketchup
- Molasses (about a tablespoon)
- Ground Cinnamon
- Ground Cayenne
- Hoagie Roll
- Optional: Sliced Cheddar Cheese
Method:
- Dice your pepper, onions, and garlic. Then, heat up some oil in a pan, and sautee until your veggies soften.
- Add in your ground meat, and cook completely. Allow excess liquids to cook off and evaporate.
- Add in a significant amount of ketchup, your molasses, some cinnamon, and cayenne depending on how much spice you like, and stir to combine. *We were making our sandwiches for later, so we transferred our meat/veggies to a slow cooker, and we added our ingredients and combined to make our sauce in that vessel.
- Once your sauce thickens, slice your rolls, and add (optional) cheese.
- Scoop your filling onto your rolls, devour, and enjoy!
