This past Monday would have been my Grandma’s birthday, so I made this in her honor. One of my favourite memories as a kid was spending a week each summer with her and my grandpa. We would go for walks along the St Lawrence River, play lots of cards, eat lots of ice cream, and play the “Cows and Graveyards” game while driving into town…which I think may have been a game she invented to keep us kids from driving her up a wall!
Anyway, one meal she would always make whenever I was up was ham…and it was incredible every time. I’d always smear some fresh apple sauce atop, and I’d eat until I could eat no more. To this day, I still spread apple sauce over ham steak or spiral ham. Anyway, the meal would continue, and then the Strawberry Rhubarb Pie would make an appearance, and I was in heaven! As a little side note, I’m incredibly lucky that my wife’s grandma makes equally good ham and Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, and whenever she makes it, it brings me right back to those summers with Nanny.
Anyway, when it came time to decide what to make to honor Nanny, ham was the logical choice. So, I got to work and made this Savory Pie! I think she would have enjoyed this one.

- Arrange your pie dough in your pie pans.
- Fill your pie dough with your turnip and ham filling, and spread evenly.
- Slice your cheese, and arrange atop
- Bake for 40-45 minutes.
