On Mondays, we head a handful of miles north to have dinner with my wife’s grandparents…and while typically, Gramma works her kitchen magic, every now and then, we bring dinner up. One of their favourite meals is Ribs that fall right off the bone, and so that’s exactly what we decided to bring!
Ribs can be quite the blank canvas upon which to build flavour, which is part of why we like them so much. For this rib iteration, we decided to build around garlic and honey as our primary flavours. We then added a little salt sprinkle, some mustard powder, and some hot paprika to the party to slow cook…and when they were super tender and ready, we slathered a bit of bbq sauce atop and finished them in the oven.
We served our ribs with my wife’s great aunt’s amazing coleslaw (with green peppers included) and some sauteed carrots and beets!

Time: 7 Hours (most of which is slow cooker time)
Ingredients:
- Pork Ribs
- Fresh Garlic
- Salt
- Hot Paprika
- Mustard Powder
- Honey
- BBQ Sauce of your Choice
Method:
- Remove your ribs from the packaging, and pat them dry. Then, use a knife to start to separate the membrane from the underside of the rack from the ribs themselves. Once you’ve got that started, remove it by pulling it right off. Then, flip your ribs back so they are meatside up, and wash your hands.
- Peel your garlic, and then either use a garlic press or a microplane grater to turn your garlic into almost a paste.
- Use your hands to rub your garlic evenly atop your your ribs, and then wash hands again.
- Sprinkle a little salt onto your ribs, and then do the same with your hot paprika and mustard powder.
- Cut your ribs into the portion sizes you want, and stash in your slow cooker. Set it to low, and cook for around 6 hours.
- When you’ve got about 2 hours left to cook, drizzle your honey atop your ribs.
- As your slow cooker time draws to a close, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
- When your ribs are done slow cooking, carefully remove them, and place them in a single layer atop a baking sheet.
- Spread your BBQ sauce atop evenly, and stash in the oven for another 15 minutes or so.
- Plate, devour, and enjoy!
