Pizza with Broccoli Sauce

My wife got an idea to make a pizza sauce out of broccoli about a year ago, and ever since, we’ve been including it in our pizza rotation. Any time I get a craving for it though, I ask her to cook it since she always nails it, and you don’t mess with perfection.

Essentially, this is a great way to add some new flavours and a lot of nutrition to your pizzas, and this sauce goes well with so many different topping combinations that I don’t actually think she’s made the same pie twice. Some of the best combinations in recent memory though are:

  • Just plain shredded cheddar (although adding bacon or ham is never discouraged)
  • Garlic chicken sausage and mushrooms
  • Mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, and Gruyere
  • Sun-dried tomato chicken sausage, tomatoes, and feta
  • Fresh mozzarella and tomatoes
  • Roasted red pepper and Gouda

Time: 35 minutes

Ingredients:

  • Pizza Crust (make your own or use store bought)
  • Broccoli (or broccoli stalks if you’ve got some laying around in need of a purpose in life)
  • Onion
  • Milk/Cream
  • Garlic
  • Your toppings and cheese of choice

Method:

  • Place your pizza stone in the oven, and preheat it to 375 degrees F
  • Sauce:
    • Cut your broccoli and onion (if using broccoli stalks, peel them first)
    • Steam/Sautee/use other cooking method of your choice, and cook until the broccoli and onion is soft
    • Put the broccoli and onion in your food processor/blender/Ninja, add a little cream or milk, and add garlic (amount depends on whether you want a hint of garlic…use a little…or to to fend off vampires forever…use a lot)
    • Pulse until smooth
  • Place your crust/dough on your hot pizza stone, and then spoon your sauce on.
  • Apply the rest of your toppings, and cook until it’s done.
  • Plate, devour, and enjoy!
