BBQ Poutine

We’ve been having a lot of fun playing with the concept of Poutine ever since returning from our trip to Canada in December…and we’d noticed that any time we ate it, our football team won! So given that we were in the midst of a playoff run, we decided to enjoy this culinary delight while also providing what we thought would be good luck to the Bills. Well, only one such thing happened, as the season ended the night we cooked this…but the food was good!

For this one, we decided to go a little wild, so we started with a base of sweet potato fries instead of a traditional French fry. We picked those because we thought that they’d complement the sweet tanginess of the BBQ sauce well (and they did). From there, we added our cheese curds and finished it off with a jackfruit smothered in a BBQ “Gravy.” However, we think that this would lend itself nicely to pulled pork or chicken instead if you want something meatier.

Finally, we finished our meal with a side of Steamed Broccoli, which added a nice texture contrast and some vibrant colour to our meal!

Time: 60 Minutes (+ any time to slow cook your pork/chicken if not using pre-cooked…or time to Break Down your Jackfruit if not using pre-packaged)

Ingredients:

  • Sweet Potatoes (or Frozen Sweet Potato Fries)
  • Cheese Curds
  • BBQ Sauce. A thinner sauce will make for a better result in this dish.
  • Protein of your Choice. We used Jackfruit, but pulled chicken or pork would be great too.
  • Onion
  • 1 Tablespoon Butter
  • 1 Tablespoon All Purpose Flour

Method:

  • If using fresh pork or chicken, cook in a crockpot on low for 4-5 hours with some BBQ sauce, and then use two forks to shred it. If using fresh jackfruit, break it down, and slice it into thin strips.
  • Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with foil, and give it a good oil spray.
  • If using fresh sweet potatoes, rinse and slice them into French Fry shape, and arrange them on your baking sheet, and sprinkle a little salt on top. If using frozen fries, arrange them on your baking sheet. Then, bake for 45-60 minutes. Flip your fries about halfway into the cooking.
  • Slice your onion thinly.
  • When your fries have about 20 minutes to go, melt a tablespoon of butter in a frying pan, and add your sliced onions. Sauté until they become opaque. If using fresh jackfruit, add it to the pan at the same time as your onions.
  • Sprinkle in a tablespoon of all purpose flour, and stir to fully incorporate it into your onions, and let cook for another minute or two.
  • Add in your jackfruit (if using prepackaged) or pulled pork/chicken, and stir to combine and reheat.
  • Pour your BBQ Sauce in the pan, stir into your other ingredients, and let simmer to thicken.
  • As your sauce finishes, arrange your sweet potato fries in a bowl, and top them with your cheese curds.
  • When your BBQ sauce has thickened into a gravy, scoop your BBQ jackfruit/pork/chicken over your fries and curds.
  • Plate, devour, and enjoy!
