Olverindulgence Philly Cheesesteak

The Philly Cheesesteak is one of the most iconic foods of Southeastern Pennsylvania (although don’t sleep on the Roast Pork sandwich with provolone and broccoli rabe!). It’s delicious, and it can be made to suit nearly everyone’s taste (as long as they eat meat…although as I’m typing this out, I’m already pondering ways to cater to vegetarians…maybe a “Philly Cheesefake”). We oft play with the concept and the flavours, but as I was reading through some prior posts, it occurred to me that we don’t actually have a cheesesteak recipe on a hoagie roll!

So, when my mother-in-law gave us some sliced venison, I got into action, and this sandwich was the result. Traditionally Philly Cheesesteaks rely on “cheez wiz” (a phrase and product to which I refuse to give the respect of capitalization). With no shot of us ever embracing such a heretic to the world of cheese, we decided to coat our meat and veggies in a cheddar cheese based Roux. This gave us incredible flavour and a nice creaminess to the whole sandwich!
