I don’t really have a lot to say in terms of an introduction on this one. Home fries are a classic across cultures, and I’m guessing you already know all you need to know about them. I personally like them because they can pair with any meal. Need a side for your omelet or Quiche? Home Fries! Need to make something to bring out the rich flavour of steak, duck, or venison? Home Fries! What about something that can support the light flakiness of fish? You guessed it…Home Fries! I hope you enjoy.
Time: 30 Minutes
Ingredients:
- Potatoes (I used baby red potatoes because they’re easier to cut into small pieces quickly, and they have excellent flavour)
- Onion
- Butter (about a tablespoon)
- Any other vegetables you want to add (red or green peppers are great here, and jalapeno can give this a nice kick and completely change the flavour profile)
- Seasonings. I just used a dash of salt, but garlic powder, black pepper, paprika, and even chili powder would do thrive here as well.
Method:
- Dice your potato and your onion, and place them in separate containers (so they can be added sequentially and finish cooking at the same time)
- Heat a cast iron (or other heavy bottomed) skillet, and melt your butter in it.
- Pour your potatoes into the skillet when the butter is hot, and stir occasionally to ensure they each get lightly coated.
- When your potatoes start to brown a bit, add your onion and any other vegetables, and continue to stir
- Occasionally taste your potatoes to see when they reach your desired firmness. You may need to add some more butter or some oil to the pan part-way through.
- When the potatoes are nearly done, add your seasonings, and stir to distribute the seasonings well.
- Plate, devour, and enjoy!
