A few weeks ago, we used this same general concept (Slow Cooked Turkey Legs) to make Apple Cider Glazed Pulled Turkey. The apple flavour paired nicely with the turkey, and this week, we had some homemade apple sauce that my wife’s grandma made for us, so we decided to go back to the apple concept but switch it up a bit with the method and flavour profile!
The switch up came courtesy of the fresh apple flavours, some nutmeg, and goat milk. If you’re like my discerning food critics, you’re probably highly skeptical…To be honest, I wasn’t 100% sure it was going to work out well. But, it was good! To the point that they said I could make theirs in that style the next time!
We served our turkey with tater tots and a spinach side salad. However, this would also be great served over a mound of Sneaky Mashed Potatoes (lower carb than regular with Cabbage or Cauliflower hidden in it). Spinach Stuffing Balls would also be a great side for this entree!
Time: 6 Hours (Most of which is slow cooker time)
- Turkey Legs
- Black Pepper
- Butter (about a tablespoon)
- Apple Sauce
- All Purpose Flour (about a tablespoon)
- Goat Milk (regular milk will work too)
- Dried Cranberries
- Pat your turkey legs dry, and arrange them in your slow cooker (as flat as possible). Then, sprinkle on a little salt and black pepper. Put the lid on, set the temperature to low, and cook for about 5.5 hours.
- When your turkey is done, remove the legs, and use two forks to pull the meat off the bone and then to shred it. Be careful to get all those pesky little bones around the ankle out of your meat. Either discard your skin, or place it on a pan in the oven to crisp up as a little snack for later.
- Turn your attention to your sauce!
- Melt some butter in a pan.
- Scoop in a copious amount of apple sauce, and grate in some nutmeg with a microplane grater/lemon zester. Add your cranberries here as well (we added ours later, but we think here would be better).
- Stir occasionally for a few minutes as your apple sauce heats, and the flavours blend.
- Add in your flour, and stir to fully incorporate it into your apple sauce.
- Pour in your milk, and stir/whisk to fully incorporate and allow to thicken for a moment.
- Scoop in your pulled turkey meat, and stir to coat it with your sauce.
- Plate, devour, and enjoy!
