Apple Pork Burgers

Few meats and fruits pair as well as pork and apples. There are a handful of different ways to meld the two ingredients…pork loin with braised apples, pork chops and apple sauce, etc…but today, we wanted to create something that we saw on a menu in Wales. Sadly, I can only say that we “saw it on a menu” because they were out of it by the time we got there. Alas, I ground up some pork, my wife bought some fresh kaiser rolls, and this meal was destined to happen. We put a slice of fresh apple under the burgers, crumbled blue cheese, tomatoes, and spinach on top, and used a bbq sauce to build up the salty/sweet flavour combination.

These would pair very well with veggie sides (Roasted Asparagus, Butter Cabbage, or Brussels Sprouts) and/or Home Fries or Baked Sweet Potato Fries.

Time: 20 Minutes

Ingredients:

  • Ground pork (4-5 oz per burger)
  • 1 Apple of the type of your choice…I used fuji, but Granny Smith would be good too (you will likely only need about half of it…so the rest can be used to make a sauce, to put a slice on the bun, or to just snack on)
  • Any additional seasonings/herbs you want (Salt, Pepper, Mint Leaves, Sage, etc)

Method:

  • Dice your apple (the smaller the slices, the better since the greater surface area of the apple flavours the pork more completely)
  • With your hands, mix together the ground pork and apple (along with any other seasonings/herbs you are using)
  • Form into patties
  • Cook with your desired method until the burgers reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees F. I suggest grilling or pan-frying in cast iron.
  • Plate, devour, and enjoy!
